Richard Foster records in the second volume of his books on Birmingham New Street station that during the rebuilding of the station two subways were built at either end of the station. Each subway was initially intended to be used for passenger and luggage and parcels traffic and since there was a danger to passengers from the trolleys, there were notices on each ramp instructing the porters to walk in front of their barrows at all times. As Richard states, 'it was hard physical work for the porters to pull heavily-loaded trolleys up the ramps'. In 1905 the authorities recognised that such arrangements were too dangerous and thereafter passengers were compelled to use only the footbridge.
