Close up of image 'lnwrbns_str402' showing the steps to the passenger footbridge with the train indicator boards indicating a Midland train to Worcester, Gloucester and Bristol. The carriage bearing the 'Hampton' destination board is the coach on the left, the board barely visible. Train indicator boards were common to most large stations in the days before roller displays and electronic boards. Platform staff would select the appropriate indicator board from the box at the base of the post and slot it in at the top of the post pointing it in the direction of the train. In the above instance several slots would need to be provided in order to handle several indicator boards at once. This was because two boards could be required for the platform on the left, for trains at either end of the through platform, and two for the right for trains standing at either of the two bay platforms.
