Close up of image 'lnwrcov1282a' showing the original L&BR water column required modifications with the construction of the new platform and station buildings. The water-column was manufactured by Bury, Curtis & Kennedy and is similar to one at Bradwell on the Newport Pagnell branch. The example seen at the NRM is also in fact from Coventry station being the exampled obtained from the down platform when the station was rebuilt in the early 1960s (see image 'lnwrcov615'). The platform is obviously a little deeper with the track alignment being approximately 12 inches further away from the water column which has therefore been given an extended horizontal pipe (see 'lnwr620'). To its right is the brazier or 'fire devil' used to stop the pipe from freezing in winter. To the side of the brazier is the handle used to turn on or off the water supply. At the rear of the water column the steps have been replaced by a ramp to give access to the barrow crossing which leads to the down platform. This barrow crossing continues with two sets of boards either side of the siding leading to the down platform.
