Ex-LMS 4-6-0 5MT No 45198 is seen standing at Coventry
station's new platform three on a down Euston to Birmingham express circa 1963.
Built as LMS No 5198 by the Armstrong Whitworth Company in October 1935 it
remained in service until September 1967 when it was withdrawn from Springs
Branch shed at Wigan to be scrapped during July 1968 by J Cashmore of Great
Bridge. John Hyde writes, 'This is credited to Anon. I'll bet whoever took
it didn't what a he'd got. 45198 is coupled to tender No. 9002. This was the
tender intended for No. 6202, 'Turbomotive'. It was coupled to No 6100 (6152)
'Royal Scot' for it's tour of America in 1933. On it's return, tender No 9002
was rebuilt together with No 9000 and No 9001, into the form seen, and was
paired with Stanier Class 5 No 5000. After use behind various other Class 5s it
finished up behind No 45198. The difference from No 9002 and the standard
Stanier 4000 gallon riveted roll-top tenders is quite pronounced when they are
compared. By the way, tenders No 9000 and No 9001 in their original form were
coupled to Princess Royals No 6200 and No 6201 respectively'.
