Front elevation of the 1867 Coventry Locomotive Steam Shed designed by Stafford drawing office

Front elevation of the 1867 Coventry Locomotive Steam Shed designed by Stafford drawing office. The familiar LNWR standard sheds that subsequently evolved during Ramsbottom's time were ushered in with Crewe's new 1865 shed incorporating a series of hipped roofs in parallel, each spanning up to four roads. Central raised vents were usually provided on each roof section, the roofs being supported by brick and cast iron columns. For smaller sheds only one roof section might be required. The lingering divisional independence, which had its origins when the LNWR was divided into three such entities: the North Eastern Division; the Manchester Division; and the Southern Division; saw Stafford drawing office still designing locomotive sheds to its own individual specification resulting in Coventry's shed being erected to their design in 1867.
