Close up of image 'lnwr620' showing the London end of the up platform, the water column, ash pit and the original and new signals. The platform was extremely narrow in width with bench seating placed against the rear wall. The ash pit and piles of ash is also evidence that it was common practice at Coventry for locomotives to have their fires raked and the ash removed. This may seem a little surprising as the locomotives had only travelled a maximum of 20 miles from Birmingham and much less on the branch line from Nuneaton. However the original locomotives supplied to the L&B by Bury were very small and ash would soon accumulate in the firebox affecting the locomotives steaming abilities. The water column appears to be of a similar pattern to the L&B column which still existed on the down platform (see image 'lnwrcov615' until the station was rebuilt in 1960. In all probability it may well be the original up platform water column as depicted in Gerald Broom's painting of Coventry station later moved to this location during the 1840 rebuilding.
