The ducket allowed the guard to look safely down the outside of the train by having a window in either side. Its not known why a lamp was fitted to the top of the ducket as lamps were usually placed on the front of the locomotive or the rear of the last coach. Through careful observation of the next coach's roof gutter a row of rings can be seen with a rope passing through to the guard. In an emergency passengers would reach out and pull the rope to stop the train.
