One of the LMS' wagons being turned on the cross line and turntables located in front of the warehouse on 19th June 1935. When wagons were facing in the correct direction the turntable needed to be locked before the wagon could be moved. In order to achieve this a turntable stop key would be inserted in to the slot in the ground and its this operation that the 'hooker-on', standing on the turntable, is about to perform with his foot. The wagons were turned by the simply attaching the rope via a hook to the axle-guard. In the above photograph two wagons coupled to each other were drawn forward and then uncoupled to be individually rotated to be moved into the warehouse which is to the left of the photographer.
