Built by Crewe works in October 1948 No 41228 remained in service until June 1964 when it was withdrawn from 70A Nine Elms shed. This class of locomotives was introduced between 1946 and 1952 and were based on the LMS Stanier 2-6-2T which was, in turn, based on the LMS Fowler 2-6-2T. Prior to nationalisation on 1st January 1948 ten locomotives were built by the LMS and were numbered from No 1200 to No 1209. British Railways added 40,000 to all LMS locomotive numbers which resulted in the ten locomotives being numbered from No 41200 to No 41209. Whereas both the Fowler and Stanier designs were found wanting this was a very successful design and a further 120 were built by British Railways, numbered No 41210 to No 41329. All but the last ten locomotives were built by Crewe works, the last ten being built by Derby works. Fifty engines were fitted with push-pull equipment, these being No 41210 to No 41220, No 41270 to No 41289 and finally No 41320 to 41329.
