Ex-LMS 2-8-0 8F No 48762 hauls a failed Gloucester DMU through the station on its way to Ryecroft Walsall on 22nd February 1960

Ex-LMS 2-8-0 8F No 48762 hauls a failed Gloucester DMU set through the station on its way to Ryecroft Walsall on 22nd February 1960. The former steam shed at Ryecroft had been closed to steam in June 1958 to create the West Midlands first DMU depot, its steam allocation having been transferred to Bescot. The 8F design was built by all of the big four companies, originally when ordered by the War Department as its standard Railway Operating Department's locomotive, but also later for the LMS or for their own use. This locomotive was built as LNER No 3157 by the LNER at Doncaster Plant in January 1946 and classified as an O6 class locomotive. Prior to nationalisation in January 1948 No 48762 was transferred to the LMS and then to British Railways and remained in service until February 1966 when it was withdrawn from 2E Saltley shed.
