Colloquially they were called 'Cauliflowers' which was also the nick name for the LNWR Company’s Coat of Arms which was said to resemble the vegetable in outline. The nick name passing on to the locomotives because the class when first built carried the LNWR Coat of Arms on the middle splasher and it was said to look like the vegetable when viewed from a distance. Built by Crewe works in May 1901 No 710 was later renumbered by the LMS as No 8600 prior to its withdrawal from service circa 1927. The class were designed by Francis Webb (1836 - 1906) and a total of 302 were built between 1890 and 1902.
