A late Victorian or early Edwardian view of Kenilworth station looking towards Coventry station along the down platform

A late Victorian or early Edwardian view of Kenilworth station looking towards Coventry station along the down platform. The photograph is clearly posed with station staff on the left possibly demonstrating some of their duties and services provided by the railway. The movement of milk by passenger traffic was an every day occurrence at many stations, either in dispatching the milk in churns from local farms or in receiving the milk for collection by local dairies or shopkeepers. The porter's barrow or sack trolley was to be found at most stations being used either to assist passengers with their luggage or in handling parcel traffic. The term parcel traffic was very much a catch all phrase as it covered all items which could be manhandled on to a guards van provided the appropriate fare was paid. In the centre of the two other members of staff, wearing a hat but not a coat just a waistcoat, is probably a booking clerk or even a signalman. The family on the left have obviously joined in the fun posing for the photographer. The old lady is an early form of wheel chair and appears to have someone to help her. The railways were not really 'wheel chair' friendly for the first 150 years of their existence so this lady had no other choice but to ride in the guards van.
