An unidentified ex-LNWR 3P 4-6-2T 'Prince of Wales' locomotive is seen marshalling stock in Monument Lane carriage sidings circa 1929. The open wagons appear to of the five-plank design and loaded with timber for DT Powell & Company Ltd, timber merchants . By loading the timber in the wagons in the manner shown - with all of the timber planking projecting in the same direction - it was possible to transport loads that were much longer than the vehicle. At the end of the rake of wagons an empty wagon would be provided to act as a 'spacer'. All the railway needed to ensure was that the loads were sheeted with tarpaulins to prevent the catching fire from coal embers ejected by the locomotive and that no load was outside of the loading gauge. On the right is the 'Dutch' barn belonging to Powell & Company which can also be seen in image 'lnwrml2229'.
