Close up of image 'lnwrml2225' showing a shunter signalling inside Monument Lane goods depot viewed from the elevated signal cabin. Whereas the signal cabin would control the movements in to and out of the goods depot, internal movements were under the control of the shunters operating in the yard. The pointwork would be operated by hand using levers placed adjacent to the turnout. One such lever with its long handle painted white can be seen above on the left. Permission to move forward or to reverse was provided by the shunter using hand signals. Above it would appear he is holding a white cloth to provide better visibility in the crowded yard whereas at night he would use an oil lamp. The shunter and driver of the locomotive would use specific codes both in terms of arm movement by the shunter and 'crows' (blasts on the whistle) by the diver. Within the yard on the left is an ex-LMS locomotive of either a 4-6-0 or 2-8-0 wheel configuration.
