The main line between New Street and Wolverhampton is to the left and is at a lower level. The building behind the box van appears to have no roof. This may be the consequence of wartime bomb damage when much of the city's goods facilities were heavily damaged during air raids. To the left and right of the box van are guards vans which have been detached when trains have arrived. The five plank open wagon has been covered with a tarpaulin to protect the contents not just from inclement weather but possible damage from sparks and embers emitted from the locomotive's chimney during transit.
