Ex-LMS 4P 4-4-0 Compound No 41166 is seen on 3rd July 1948 alongside the shed prepared for its next trip on 3rd July 1948. The locomotive has quickly acquired its British Railways running number which was calculated by adding 40,000 to its original LMS number. It has yet to receive a tender painted in British Railways corporate livery which for a freight locomotive was a logo known colloquially as the 'cycling lion'. Terry Higgs noted in his book on the shed that the locomotive, allocated to Longsight shed, has been coaled in preparation for its next working but is facing the wrong way if it was to work back to Manchester on its next trip. Terry believes that the locomotive would in fact work the 5.8pm (17:08) New Street to Leamington Spa, as Longsight locomotives were scheduled to undertake such a local turn prior to working home. The locomotive was in fact transferred to Monument Lane within a few months of this photograph being taken. Built by the North British Locomotive Company in September 1925 No 41166 was to remain in service until September 1956 when it was withdrawn from 9E Trafford Park shed.
