Ex-LNWR 2-4-2T 'Watford Tank' No 46900 is seen standing over the
pit of one of the roads in front of Monument Lane shed in the early 1950s.
Behind the locomotive is the steel framed coaling plant built on the site of
the original shed whilst to the right the former coaling stage can be seen
complete with water tank over the top. The steel framed coaling plant was one
of seven built to this standard LMS design although many other coaling plants
were built using reinforced concrete. The Monument Lane Coaling Plant did
differ to many others insofar that the locomotive being coaled ran alongside
the plant and not underneath the plant. Built at Crewe works in October 1889 No
46900 was to be withdrawn from Monument Lane shed during the month of February
in 1953.
