The reason there were a number of short spurs ending in buffer stops was to accommodate a variety of movements with the minimum of disruption to other traffic. An example being coaches which had failed, as seen above, which would need to be removed from the train and shunted out of the way for either in-situ repairs or until a more convenient time was found to move them to the repair shop.
