Ex-LNER 4-6-0 B16 No 61440 stands outside Rugby Testing Station minus its rear set of wheels circa 1959. Vic Smith writes, 'No 61440 allocated to 50A York shed failed at Woodford Halse with a defective driving wheel set. It was hauled to Rugby shed, minus its rear coupling rods, by ex-LMS 8F 2-8-0 No 48442. The route used to move the failed locomotive was via the Stratford Midland Junction line to Blisworth and then down the branch to Northampton, where it had a short stay at the MPD, before moving on to Rugby, arriving 12th June 1960. At Rugby, the defective wheel set was removed and a temporary wheel set fitted. The loco then worked in steam as a 4-4-2, with the trailing rods tied to the splashers of the leading driving wheels, back to Darlington Works. It was photographed in steam on Leicester Midland shed on 12th July 1960. Seen in Darlington Works Yard on 29th July 1960 No 61440 was condemned on 15th August 1960. By 10th September it was in the scrapyard, with cutting up starting around 19th November 19 and completed by 7th December 1960.
