Ex-LMS 4-6-0 rebuilt Claughton Class No 5962 is seen taking on water from a parachute water tank

Ex-LMS 4-6-0 rebuilt Claughton Class No 5962 is seen taking on water from a parachute water tank before its moves forward to the turntable circa 1932. Built as LNWR No 194 at Crewe works to order 5505 in January 1920 No 5962 was one of a number of Claughton's rebuilt in an effort to improve the efficiency of the class. The most obvious improvement was the fitting of a larger boiler (subsequently fitted to the Patriot class locomotives). Other significant failures such as the issue of cylinder efficiency were also addressed by the use of multiple rings in the cylinder. However, these improvements came too late as the decision to build the Patriot class, by harnessing the boiler used on the rebuilt Claughtons with the chassis of the Royal Scot, had been made. This locomotive received it LMS running number in February 1927 and was withdrawn from service in December 1935 to be scrapped by Crewe works.
