LMS Route: Rugby to Wolverhampton
Stechford: lnwrstfd2850b
Close up of image 'lnwrstfd2850' showing the station's down
platform and the array of gas lanterns and lamp posts used to light the
station. The use of gas for lighting stations was a late 19th century
development and was very much dependent upon access to a suitable supply,
something which was not too problematic for Stechford being part of the fast
expanding urban sprawl of Birmingham. The booking office rear wall appears to
have a walk way with handrails running at window sill level of the type found
at signal cabins and boxes. This was to allow staff to gain access to the
windows so that they could be cleaned.
