Ex-LNWR 0-8-0 G2 No 9409 passes through Warwick Milverton
station with a northbound goods service in 1937. Note the station name board,
or to give it its correct technical name 'Running-in Board', had the
'Milverton' framed with an inverted comma at both ends. Due to the curve in the
track at the station, the tall signal post on the right has been fitted with
semaphore signal arms for both the down and up direction. Built as LNWR No 396
by Crewe in February 1922 the locomotive was renumbered by the LMS as No 9409
in October 1926 and then as No 44909 by British Railways in August 1950 which
it retained until June 1959 when it was withdrawn from 86K Tredegar shed to be
scrapped by J Cashmores of Great Bridge. Finally, note the houses on the right
which have raised walls above the roof line. These are known as 'London'
firewalls reflecting that London was synonymous with this practice. It wasn't
unknown for terraced houses to be built with no dividing wall in the roof
(attic) space which could be very dangerous if a fire broke out.
