Ex-MR 2F 0-6-0 No 58168 is seen inside the roundhouse at Bournville on Sunday 27th December 1959. The shed looks nearly empty and was only weeks away from closure. Originally built by Neilson & Company of Glasgow, the engine entered service as Midland Railway '1142' class No 1227 in 1876. The Midland rebuilt it with 18" cylinders in 1890, rebuilt it again in 1898 (details not available), assigned it to power class 2 in 1905, renumbered it No 2995 in 1907, rebuilt it again in 1913 (details not available), then rebuilt it with Fowler 'G6' Belpaire boiler & 'RE2' cab in 1919. After the grouping, the LMS reclassified it as 2F in 1928. Westhouses was its home shed in 1945-7. British Railways allotted it No 58168 in March 1948, renumbering it in December 1950. Westhouses remained its home shed until it was reallocated to Saltley in November 1955. It was officially transferred from Saltley to Bournville in July 1959, presumably as a replacement for the withdrawn No 58167, although it had actually been in store before that date on one of the sidings beside the shed. The sacking over the chimney in the photo implies it was probably still in working order and it was reallocated to Bushbury when Bournville closed in February 1960. The reprieve was a short one and the engine was withdrawn from Bushbury in July 1960. It is believed to have been scrapped in September 1960.
