Midland Railway engines photographed inside Bournville shed on Sunday 31st August 1919

Midland Railway locomotives are seen inside Bournville shed on Sunday 31st August 1919. The five facing the turntable can be identified from left to right as follows:

2-4-0 No 18: Built 1868 - Rebuilt three times by 1919 - Withdrawn in 1934
0-6-0 No 3536: Built 1897 - Rebuilt in 1927 - Withdrawn in 1961 (BR No 58283)
2-4-0 No 129: Built 1874 - Rebuilt three times by 1919 - Withdrawn in 1929
0-6-0 No 2625: Built 1870 - Rebuilt three times by 1919 - Withdrawn in 1932
2-4-0 No 19: Built 1868 - Rebuilt twice by 1919 - Rebuilt in 1925 - Withdrawn in 1933

All have Johnson boilers & cabs, some over double-frames, and had been renumbered in 1907. The 2-4-0s would have been painted in the passenger engine livery of lined crimson lake, the 0-6-0s in the freight engine livery of plain black. A sixth unidentifiable engine is just visible on the right, hoisted up on shear legs. The roundhouse was spacious, well ventilated and well lit, with two engine portals and lots of windows. The portal behind No 3536 served the sand house, the inside wall of which is to its right. It had its own sliding wooden door fitted, probably to keep out cold and wintry weather. The turntable pit is covered with timber boards, later removed. Allocations in 1920 show No 3536 at Bournville, Nos 18,19, 2625 at Saltley & No 129 at Peterborough. Links to other photos taken on 31st August 1919 are 'mrb8', 'mrb11', 'mrb13' and 'mrb1552'.
