The tall chimney at the back of the shed was photographed on Friday 3rd November 1961. The shed had been closed for over eighteen months by then. There would have been a boiler house at its base which was probably responsible for pumping out groundwater for the shed's water tank nearby and for drying sand used in locomotive sand boxes. It was the tallest chimney at the shed. There were two more above the workshop/storeroom/office block and a host of them on the shed roof for carrying engine smoke away. There was another one at the corner of the coaling stage. All the buildings would be demolished later that month.
