LMS Route: Evesham to Birmingham
Barnt Green: mrbg618a
Close up of image 'mrbg618' showing a Bristol bound express
train passes opposite the signal box hauled by two Johnson single locomotives.
These locomotives were of a 4-2-2 wheel configuration and had in the 1890s been
reborn as passenger motive power because of the advent of steam sanding. The
increase in train loadings soon resulted in their demise in providing primary
motive power and they were soon to be found piloting other locomotives. The MR
policy of running relatively light loadings allowed the 4-2-2 configuration to
last much longer than other railways. Its worth remembering that by the time
this photograph was taken the GWR had built a 4-6-2 pacific locomotive.
