Birmingham New Street - Southern Approaches: mrbhm_sa2317a

Close showing the original Duddeston to Derby Junction viaduct with Lawley Street Goods Station beyond

Close of image 'mrbhm_sa2317' showing the original Duddeston to Derby Junction viaduct with Lawley Street Goods Station beyond. The original Derby to Birmingham line can be seen as can the distinctive curve of the replacement line in order to sweep under the L&BR seen in image 'mrbhm_sa1902'. The original line from Derby was itself a replacement section of track being built following the Birmingham Extension Act of 1843 which allowed the MR to close their original terminus at Lawley Street and to run into Curzon Street, and then later, New Street station. This required the MR to construct a line from Duddeston Junction to join the LNWR at a point described as Derby Junction. This route was opened in 1850 and remained in place until the quadrupling of the lines in parallel with the building of New Street extension to accommodate the MR in 1896.
