Close up of image 'mrcgy915' showing the method of
transporting timber planking utilising standard open railway wagons. The
timbers were placed so that they rested on one of the wagon ends with all
wagons configured so that the timber planking faced the same direction.
Therefore the overhang could be accommodated provided the height and width were
within the loading gauge. At the end of a rake of such wagons a 'runner' would
be inserted to accommodate the overhang. This could be a single bolster wagon
which during the Victorian era would have been fitted with dumb buffers. See
image 'mrcgy924b' for such an example.
