The notice on the left, mounted on a section of old rail, indicates that the line from Whitacre to Maxstoke (formerly Coleshill) was open for a period of time to locomotives under British Railways management. Regular traffic from Whitacre to Maxstoke ceased on 1st May 1939 but the branch was retained for wagon storage until 11th February 1951 although part of the line had been removed in April 1939. The Maxstoke to Hampton section was closed from 2nd April 1930, the River Blythe bridge being removed on 12th January 1935. Part of the line was used for War Department activities during the Second World War. Part of the line was retained for wagon storage until at least 26th November 1951 and perhaps until 1952-53.
