Aerial view of the now abandoned Five Ways station's down platform viewed from Islington Row bridge. The platform edge has been cut back on both platforms through the simple process of removing the edging stone. The reason for this action would have been to increase the clearance within the loading gauge. It's thought that the brick structure was erected after the station was closed and demolished presumably to provide facilities for the Permanent Way gang maintaining the track in this area. The brick structure is typical of the type of utilitarian buildings erected during the Second World War. Mick Bramich writes "The tracks on the left ran through a tunnel to the best kept secret in Birmingham, Central Goods. I never saw a train running on these tracks but I have seen a photograph of a 4-6-0 Scot hauling wagons down the incline to the main line."
