Stanier 4-6-0 5MT No 44745 is seen working hard at the head of a down express service to Gloucester and the South West in 1953. Built at Crewe works in July 1948 No 44745 was one of several Black 5's modified in pursuit of higher mileage between services and better coal consumption. As with all locomotives built after nationalisation the locomotive was withdrawn well before its working life had expired in this instance during October 1964 when it was withdrawn from 8M Southport shed on the former Cheshire Lines.
