Ex-LMS 0-6-0 4F No 44411 passes Hazelwell signal box at the head of a Class E 'Maltese' express freight service. The 'Maltese' category was used to describe trains where a minimum of four vacuumed braked vehicles were attached behind the tender to increase the effectiveness of the braking power of the locomotive. The signal box was opened on 6th April 1902 with a probable closing date of 7th September 1969. Built by Derby works in September 1927, No 44411 was to remain in service until October 1963 when it was withdrawn from 82F Green Park shed in Bath to be scrapped in April 1964 by Swindon works.
