Looking towards Kingsbury Junction with the lines to Whitacre on the left and Water Orton on the right seen on 30th June 1959. This view shows that speed limit on the fast line to Water Orton was 60mph compared to the 30mph on the route to Whitacre. The junction was installed by the Midland Railway in 1909 as part of its strategic planning to increase speeds. The frenetic pace of building during the first two or three decades of railway development had resulted in some routes being longer than they needed to be and in order to respond to competition short cuts needed to be built. This policy was adopted by many railway companies during the last decade of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th century. The GWR were major proponents of this policy as were the GCR with the LNWR and MR following suit.
