Towards the last quarter of the 19th century the railway proved to be extremely
popular with passengers with up to 184,000 passengers using the station in
1900. However from 1907 the number of passengers declined to less than half as
the railway faced competition from the electric trams introduced to replace the
steam trams. This was a common situation facing most of the stations located
near to the city centre with most being closed by the outbreak of the Second
World War.
