View of one of the internal wells used to both raise and lower goods within the confines of the shed

View of one of the internal wells used to both raise and lower goods within the confines of the shed as well as allowing light to stream in from the roof light into the lower floors. The massive proportions of the shed can be seen in this view. When opened in 1895 a contemporary report in Transport Volume 6, of 29th Match 1895 stated that the goods shed covers 2½ acres with the first floor being carried on 336 girders, 3ft 3ins deep supported on 99 columns of 1ft 9 ins diameter. With the same floor area the second floor not surprisingly had the same number of girders and pillars although as seen above not of the same diameter whilst the roof only required 10 spans. The three floors therefore occupied 7½ acres in total with each floor being rated to carry 14,596 tons. On the ground floor there were 9 sets of rails providing accommodation for up to 88 wagons.
