View of Northfield's MR timber bracket signal controlling the up goods line and the LMS tubular steel signal controlling the up main line. As can be seen. the MR signals are lower quadrant with the arm being lowered to approximately 22° from the horizontal when in the 'on' position allowing trains to proceed to the next section. The LMS signal are however upper quadrant signals, which refers to the arm being raised to approximately 22° from the horizontal when in the 'on' position. The change in practice of using upper instead of lower quadrant signals followed an accident where snow prevented the arm from being raised to the horizontal 'danger' position.
