Close up showing the bridges carrying the MR's lines to Ashby and Leicester over the West Coast Main Line

Close up of image 'mrna1671' showing the bridges carrying the MR's lines to Ashby and Leicester over the West Coast Main Line. The Midland line to Leicester is seen crossing the Trent Valley at the bottom of the photograph whilst the branch from Abbey Junction to Ashby is seen curving away to the right. On the right is the junction carrying LNWR traffic from the West Coast Main Line to Ashby. The sidings between the line connecting to the Trent Valley line and the line to Leicester were designed to accommodate long mineral trains. Its not known whether these sidings were used as exchange sidings between the LNWR and Midland in the days before grouping in 1923. However since the 1860s the Midland did have running rights to Coventry over LNWR lines where it had a goods shed in the LNWR goods yard so its more likely that exchange traffic between the companies would have taken place at the LNWR's more extensive facilities.
