Nuneaton Abbey Street Station: mrna49b
Close up of image 'mrna49' showing the Birmingham end of
Abbey Street station's down platform showing the short cattle dock siding. The
cattle would be loaded via the pens seen to the right of the cattle wagons,
having been driven down from the main road. The gas lights typical Midland
pattern lamps as isis thethe station name board. The water crane has its
bag anchored by the chain and wire rope to prevent the arm from swinging
and fouling the main line. It was also used by enginemen to pull the bag across
the line into the tender's hole. A small brazier, which would be lit during
freezing weather, can be seen at the foot of the column. A section of the
1914 Ordnance Survey shows that to the right of the
siding seen above was another short siding with a locomotive turntable
positioned half-way along.
