View of the stabling roads outside Saltley shed's No 3 roundhouse showing the many locomotives that have made ready for their next allocation of duties circa 1931. This view of the yard was taken from the old coaling stage and due to the number of locomotives in view was undoubtedly taken on a Sunday. The yard has been provided with a series of long three sided bins erected alongside the nearest row of locomotives which have been supplemented by planking fixed between each bin to create ad-hoc bins. These were used to allow disposal crews to clean ash from the firebox and smokebox of locomotives without needing to queue at the ash disposal plant.

As locomotives came off duty on Saturday they would be coaled and watered and have their fires dropped and ash cleaned from the smokebox. They would then be disposed of being placed in line according to their duties on Monday morning. One of the locomotives in view is ex-MR 3F 0-6-0 No 3575 a MR class 1873 built by Kitson & Co circa 1897. Later renumbered by BR as No 43575 she was withdrawn from Staveley (Barrow Hill) shed in May 1958 and scrapped in September 1958 by Crewe works.
