LMS Route: The Shakespeare Route

Ettington Station: smje14a

Close up of image 'smje14' showing Ettington station's platform mounted signal box and the small staging used by the signalman to exchange the staff with locomotive crews. This signal box was only operational after 1911 during normal business hours having been fitted with one of the earliest examples of electric train staff equipment. This allowed the signal box to be switched out meaning only the up line was in operation as part of the whole route between Kineton and Stratford on Avon. This meant that there were two different ways of working this section of the route. When the signal box was in use the Kineton to Ettington section was protected by a red round staff whilst the Ettington to Stratford on Avon section was protected by a blue round staff. When the signal box was switched out (not in use) the Kineton to Stratford section was operated as one section protected by a long section token, coloured green.
