LMS Route: The Shakespeare Route

Fenny Compton Station: smjfc174

Looking towards the Great Western Railway's line with the former SMJ line beyond on 4th September 1931

Looking towards the Great Western Railway's line with the former SMJ line beyond on 4th September 1931. As can be seen, the underpass was vulnerable to flooding so the level crossings on the left were the only means of crossing both lines in times of flood. Stationmaster Wood is wearing his GWR hat, which incorporated LMS lettering, as he was responsible for both stations. Prominent on the left of the picture is the brand new joint GWR/LMS signal box, opened on 29th May, and the Great Western box which it replaced is on the extreme left. SMJ Bridge No 52 can be seen beyond the GWR bridge as too can an early motor car be seen stopped by the floods. On the right at least one gentleman has decided to use an older, if more reliable, form of transport. Behind him is the Great Western's down platform and, to his left, one of the familiar corrugated iron permanent way huts.
