Looking across the SMJ level crossing towards the joint GWR/LMS Fenny Compton Signal Box in the Blisworth direction in March 1952. The level crossing was in the early years of the railway rarely used as road traffic tended to use the under-bridge. However as road vehicles became larger, which the under-bridge could not accommodate, the level crossings became increasingly used. The erection of a joint signal box was initiated by the need by both railway companies to make economies in the aftermath of the depression and falling revenues. However the presence of two level crossings, each with its own set of gates only a matter of yards apart, also made operational sense.
