Close up of image 'smjfc17' showing the former SMJ structure on the up platform which incorporated a store and a waiting room. The waiting room has no doorway fitted and inside the entrance to the right can be seen the partition wall. To see the store from the other side see image 'smjfc141'. The main station facilities including the booking and parcels office were on the down platform. The station layout was dictated by its proximity to the GWR station which was the earlier of the two stations. The fire buckets seen on the front of the signal box were filled with sand as this was far more effective in putting out burning or smoldering embers. The box by the first poster is thought to contain a telephone although being adjacent to the signal box it would seem a little unusual.
