LMS Route: The Shakespeare Route

Fenny Compton Station: smjfc22c

Close up showing the GWR level crossing and in the distance on the right, the GWR's up refuge siding controlled by the small signal

Close up of image 'smjfc22' showing the GWR level crossing and in the distance on the right, Next to the small signal and what appears to be solid fencing is the under bridge that ran parallel with the level crossing under both railway lines. In the foreground is the siding, complete with trap points, that ran to the cattle pens which were located behind the photographer. Trap points were used to protect running lines from runaway wagons and in essence derailed the wagons whilst they were parallel with the running lines. The length of the siding together with little or no incline meant that wagons so derailed would not over turn to foul the running line.
