LMS Route: Stratford Midland Junction - The Shakespeare
Route
Stratford on Avon Station: smjsa244
Looking east past the former up platform towards the bridge
carrying the line over the River Avon on 17th April 1965. The water column,
complete with its 'fire devil' to stop it from freezing in winter, issited
between the up and down lines is still in place. As is evident, the rails are
very rusty a factor which led to the line's urgent closure because when the
1960 chord linking the SMJ to the GWR line was built the revised layout was
heavily protected by track circuit enabled interlocking. However with the lack
of use the track circuit was impded by the rust and failed to detect when
sections were occupied.
