The small corrugated hut to the right of the signal box was where the SMJ fire-engine shed stood. This housed the Merryweather steam fire engine which cost £115 in 1909. The fire-engine comprised a vertical boiler and pump mounted on two large wheels, with an iron bar shaped in the manner of shafts of a rickshaw to enable it to be moved to the scene of the fire. Arthur Jordan commented that it "looked very impressive with its highly polished brasswork, gleaming red paintwork and a column of smoke and steam rising confidently from its chimney pipe".
