Building the last Main Line Railway
Great Central Bridge and Viaduct: gcrcs142
Nearing completion, this is bridge no. 451, the famous
girder viaduct that brought the Great Central's Main Line over the London &
North Western Railway at Rugby. For obvious reasons, the structure has become
known as the Birdcage, although it was never referred to as such by the
railwaymen who worked the route: they knew it simply as the 'girder bridge' at
Rugby.
