Building the last Main Line Railway
Newton to the Oxford Canal: gcrcs158
A close up view of one of the massive brick abutments built
to anchor the the north end of the Great Central viaduct. This photograph is
also incorrectly identified on both of the Transport Archive and Leicestershire
websites. They state, This is one of the massive brick abutments which were
built at either end of the Great Central's four span girder viaduct (bridge
448) across the Oxford Canal north of Rugby. Eventually, the vast quantity
of spoil would be formed into a neatly dressed embankment.
