LNER Route: Leicester to Marylebone
Rugby Central Station: gcrgen304
LNER Flying Scotsman' pauses at Rugby Central with an up
special excursion from Sheffield on 15th June 1963. Alan Hogg writes,
'thanks to the kindness of my mother I was on the Flying Scotsman excursion
from Sheffield to London that day in June 1963. Being a very poor teenager I
have no photos of it at all- it was difficult to scrape up the rail fare! On a
very wet day in April 1965, Rugby was to be the furthest south I ever ventured
on my own from Sheffield. The GC was dead on its feet by then and it was
raining so hard I couldn't walk from Rugby Central to look at the new electrics
on the newly electrified section from Nuneaton. It cost me one shilling and
threepence return from Leicester Central to Rugby, that plus the seven
shillings and sixpence from Sheffield to Leicester. Not sure if I would have
had the threepence to get me on to Rugby Midland!
