Building the last Main Line Railway
Contractor's Builders Yards & Locomotives: gcrcs48
The contractor's 0-6-0ST locomotive 'St George' on a train
of contractors wagons. Of interest is the fact that the end of each wagon
nearest to the locomotive is open indicating that each will be tipped end on.
The wagon to the left shows that its 'dumb' buffers are sited inside the
wheels, not as wide as standard railway practice. As can be seen, St George's
inside set of 'dumb' buffers match the wagon's buffers. They are called 'dumb'
because they are solid and are not sprung to reduce the impact of the collision
when shunted against each other. The couplings were very crude, on the wagon
its a length of chain with a round link in the middle and on the locomotive its
a chain with a hook on the end. C1896
